Charlie Bartlett(2007) – a nice little surprise
Charlie Bartlett is a very sweet little movie about a creative and resourceful (and rich) misfit determined to fit in at his high school. It’s quirky, surprising, and amusing. In a sea of painfully formulaic high school movies, here’s one … Continue reading

Persepolis – Should be required viewing for Americans
American democracy and Iranian democracy are more similar than you might think. Iranians are allowed to vote for their president, but a rotten bunch of officially appointed assholes (the Guardian Council) decides the candidates they get to chose from, and … Continue reading

I Could Never Be Your Woman(2007) – Amy Heckerling’s Mid-Life Crisis
I don’t think I Could Never Be Your Woman ever made it to theaters (I could be wrong) despite being an Amy Heckerling film with big stars in it. For a while my wife and I let that stop us … Continue reading

Sunshine – Has there ever been a Sci-Fi film this good?
I could barely breathe for a very large portion of this film. My first reaction was disbelief that they could still make science fiction movies like this. But then I realized that I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a science … Continue reading

Jellyfish (Meduzot) (2007) an interesting little film
Jellyfish reminds me so much of the style of filmmaking that characterized the independent film renaissance of the early-to-mid 1990s – sparse music, uncluttered plots, well-written dialog, warm and simple presentation of characters, moments of deep emotion captured with tenderness, and a … Continue reading

In the Land of Women (2007) – a decent film that could have been great
In the Land of Women is a pretty good film. It could have been a great film. It had electrifying young leads: the warm and charismatic Adam Brody and the fabulous Kristen Stewart [editor’s note: this was before her acting took its … Continue reading

No Country For Old Men – Why, exactly, are the Coen brothers so revered as filmmakers?
Alright, I’ve had it. The Coen brothers have struck again, and once again I am left shaking my head in disbelief as everyone else falls over themselves in utter rapturous praise. This film, which may rank among the DUMBEST films … Continue reading

Once – an infomercial for some guy’s bad music
This movie is a shameless vehicle for Glen Hanslard’s caterwauling music, nothing more and certainly nothing less. The opening scene, where he is standing out on a street corner wailing his highly repetitive music with great gusto, is okay. “The … Continue reading

4 months, 3 days & 2 weeks – palm d’BORE
Okay, Palm d’Or winner here. I lasted about half an hour. Two jerky, weirdly unsympathetic women trying to get an illegal abortion in Communist Romania. They meet up with a drone-like thug who apparently gives abortions and go to a … Continue reading

Juno – snappy, watchable, but not a great film
One of the best films of the year (2007)? Hardly. Juno is written with quirky, snappy dialog that is a lot of fun to listen to, and Ellen Page has a great voice to deliver the lines with. The story … Continue reading
