About Irreviews

Irreviews was born out of love. In 2009 my wife was going through tough times, and since she always enjoyed my strange, irreverent opinions on movies, I started this blog to make her laugh. She’s feeling much better now, and has become an unofficial contributor to (and character in) this blog. At the same time, the scope and intent of the blog has grown and changed considerably over time.

For several years I had the time, energy and inclination to take in quite a few films a year and review them. I saw Irreviews as bringing a fresh and liberated attitude toward reviewing movies, one that tried to stand in contrast to the tedious plot summaries and tepid, gutless intellectualism of the various New York critics (A.O. Scott, Stephen Holden, Manohla Dargis, David Demby, and the once-formidable Anthony Lane). I still see it this way.

But lately I’m finding that other writing projects are demanding more and more of my time and interest, and I’m less inclined to see a movie just to review it, especially since I find the output of the movie industry (including the indie and Euro movements) to be, with few exceptions, so dull and uninspired that they’re not even worth Netflixing, let alone paying for. For this reason, Irreviews is now focusing not so much on trying to review everything, but rather essaying about certain films that struck me especially strongly, positively or negatively, as well as continuing my “Appreciations” of the greatest films of all time, as I see them.

Thanks for visiting, and I hope you enjoy the blog!
