I liked Uncertainty, which I saw with my wife at the IFC theater in Manhattan. As I have mentioned in prior reviews, I am a big fan of Joseph Gordon Levitt and have been waiting for him to finally get a leading romantic role where he can strut his stuff. This is as close as he has ever gotten, even though it still falls short by a good bit. Thankfully, the filmmakers solved his plastic-action-figure appearance by making his hair bigger and giving him a beard – presto: a normal, good-looking person! As usual he gives a wonderful, natural performance, but unfortunately as with so many movies nowadays the writers just didn’t write enough dialog for him. Such a shame.
Unlike 500 Days of Summer where Levitt was paired with bubble-eyed zombie bride Zooey Deschanel, here his co-star is the relatively unknown Lynn Collins, who I remembered fondly as Wendy in 13 going on 30. Lynn Collins is one of those actresses where you just ask “why isn’t this person a huge star?” She has the look, a totally fabulous voice, very few tics, is really warm and charismatic, and can actually act! This will probably wind up being the one leading role of her career, and she’ll resurface in crap TV if she’s lucky, but I sincerely hope not. If I was a writer, I’d write a movie for her to star in – she’s great.
What’s more, the two of them have pretty good chemistry and their acting (at least some of which was ad-libbed, apparently) is just spot-on across a surprisingly wide variety of scenes, from riveting action sequences to a low-key and subtle family dinner right out of the early 90’s indie movement. The parallel narratives make for an engaging and satisfying pair of stories, and the film is done with class, restraint and quiet style and dignity. That’s probably why it has ZERO distribution.
Go see it, if you get that chance!
