I normally do not go for this kind of movie – a humorous chronicle of a wacky production of a play. But in Me and Orson Welles it is done so entertainingly that it won me over. The central reason it works is Christian McKay, a complete unknown, who gives such a mesmerizing performance it carries the entire movie from start to finish. Orson Welles is portrayed as a completely selfish, manipulative asshole, but McKay’s performance is so warm and self-assured that you can’t help but love the bastard at the same time as he is using and abusing people. It’s remarkable! It helps that the part of Welles is fantastically written, and McKay makes the most of it.
Everyone else in the film I can live without. I am not Zac Efron fan, and have not liked Clare Danes since Romeo & Juliet. The rest of the cast is solid and basically not distracting. But McKay is so good he just sweeps everyone up with him and carries the movie straight on through.
